The star linebacker will sit with an ankle injury.

The Atlanta Falcons just suffered a blow for this weekend's game, because Sean Weatherspoon has been declared out.

This is hardly a surprise after he left the Eagles game and went in for an MRI, but it's still disappointing. The Falcons don't have the luxury of having 'Spoon cover Jason Witten now, and that task will likely fall to Stephen Nicholas. That leaves Akeem Dent in on passing downs, as well, and that's gone about as well as a bowl of punch at a diabetes ward thus far.

It's an obvious blow to the pass defense, in other words, and the Falcons will have their hands full with Tony Romo and the passing attack unless he manages to completely implode...again. Let's hope for that outcome.

Kevin Cone has also been ruled out for Sunday's game. Drew Davis is carving out a role regardless, so Cone's absence won't end up meaning all that much. Never fun to be less than 100%, is it?

The star linebacker could be out with an ankle injury.

The Atlanta Falcons have been fairly coy about Sean Weatherspoon's injury, which was believed to be a low ankle sprain. Now it appears far from certain that he'll suit up against the Dallas Cowboys.

Mike Smith announced Wednesday that 'Spoon did not practice today and a determination on his status will be made tomorrow.

Obviously, the Falcons would miss the awesome linebacker against the Cowboys, who despite their recent struggles are still a very athletic football team capable of doing damage on offense. Cross your fingers and hope he's good to go.

There's a few banged up birds this week, but most of them are practicing on at least a limited basis. Kevin Cone and Garrett Reynolds did not practice, and I would consider both 50% or less to play this weekend. If they can't go, thankfully, Peter Konz and Drew Davis look ready to step up.

Weigh in on the report.

Fact: Spoon.

I felt pretty good during the game yesterday. Matt Ryan threw three touchdown passes in the first half. Sam Baker was shutting down Trent Cole. Tony Gonzalez was talking smack like a nineteen-year-old on a pop rocks bender.

Then Sean Weatherspoon went down.

As they carted Spoon off the field, my heart sank. But alas! Maybe it isn't that bad after all.

Falcons linebacker Sean Weatherspoon suffered a low ankle sprain against Philadelphia in the fourth quarter and his status for the Dallas game will be updated after practice on Wednesday, according to head coach Mike Smith.

Per D. Orlando Ledbetter, Smitty only makes announcements of this kind when the injury is severe. Then again, Spoon wasn't in crutches or a boot after the game; and he was apparently in a good mood. You wouldn't expect that if the injury was in fact severe. Given Spoon's relative importance to the team, Smitty may have made this announcement to alleviate concerns about his star linebacker. He's not Belichick. He doesn't use the injury report strategically. Plus Spoon tweeted that he's fine shortly after the game.

Of course, you can't understate Spoon's importance to this team. We need him. Akeem Dent filled in adequately yesterday, but all he had to do was maintain. That won't be enough going forward. I've sprained an ankle once or twice, it doesn't feel great. Wrap it enough and inject it with cortisone, it won't keep you off the field. Don't expect Spoon to miss any time. He's mobility might be adversely affected, but he will play.

Star LB Sean Weatherspoon was carted off the field with an injury against the Eagles.

Spoon is injured. Unfortunately, the severity of the injury has not been disclosed by anyone to my knowledge.

Spoon was having a good game up to that point. Really, I thought the D played well considering the task that was put in front of them. The tackling was still iffy at times, but by and large, the D did their job admirably. It helps that the offense completely owned the first half.

Usually being carted off is a very bad sign. If Spoon misses any major amount of time, it'll be Akeem Dent and Stephen Nicholas holding up the LB corps while Spoon is gone.

We know Nicks can play, but we don't really know what we have in Dent. I thought he filled in reasonably well considering the circumstances, but a player of Spoon's caliber isn't easily replaceable, unfortunately.

If Spoon is out for a good amount of time, what do you think the Falcons will do?
