This is just a fun thought experiment, but the other day I was talking to a Cowboy fan and he came up with this off-the-wall scenario, Atlanta and Washington make a pact to trade with the #1 pick from the Bears!!!

So in his mind, he thought we could convince Washington to supplement our trade capital for the assurance that we trade for the first overall pick to get Jayden Daniels, leaving Caleb Williams for them at pick 2. Williams makes sense for WSH b/c of who they have hired and Caleb being a NOVA guy, and there is no way to pick up Daniels if Caleb goes to the Bears as we would expect Washington to pick him.

We would still be on hook for the majority of the trade up value but this way Washington gets their guy and only sacrifices a 2rd round pick and/or a player to the package, we get our QB and don't have to pay the hefty price the Panthers did (we are probably still giving up at least our first rounder this year and next).

I thought this was crazy but after I sat at home watching sports news, the idea makes sense in that Washington and Atlanta get what they want and the Bears are left picking whoever is there at #8 instead of us seeing who drops to us at #8.

What do you guys think? Would this work and what do you think we would have to give up and WSH to get the Bears to play ball?

Numerous articles are being posted that indicate the Falcons are truly in on Kirk Cousins. Now whether such a deal will get done soon is anyone’s guess. But for the sake of this post, I’m betting on it. He is my first choice for QB. I have to disagree with Buck Belue.

NO!!! Not Justin Fields another quarterback that has not lived up to his potential in three seasons. Stay pat at the number 8 spot and draft Bo Nix. He will end up being the next Brett Favre whatever team drafts him. Atlanta needs to start fresh and not try to fix or hope a change of scenery fixes a quarterback from somewhere else.

I'm not saying that it's probable but what if Desmond Ridder was a product of bad, or a lack of real quarterback coaching? He did show flashes of being a capable quarterback but what if, for the sake of argument that he could develop a pocket presence?

All of the top quarterbacks besides Caleb Williams, attended the Manning Passing Academy during the offseason and became either 1st rounders or potential 1st-2nd rounders. Jayden Daniels improved so much so from the camp that he became a Heisman Trophy winner and potentially the 2nd -3rd pick of the draft.

Not saying that the Falcons should not draft a quarterback or trade for one to have an open competition for the starters job but rather should Ridder be given a chance to compete under a different set of circumstances.....and would you trust their judgement if they said that they believed that they could?

Then I feel like it might be Michael Penix Jr. He is a pocket passer. Zac Robinson has worked with Matthew Stafford and Baker Mayfield- not exactly scrambling type quarterbacks. Raheem has at least 3 years so getting an older rookie QB would allow him to focus on finishing the defense.

This team has too many holes to trade up and too many needs to blow all the cap space on a veteran QB.

Many prefer an electric QB like Daniels, but I think our OC could make a guy like Penix work while preserving draft capital and cap space.

What do you all think of this strategy?

As we approach the 2024 draft, I have to admit something about this year’s QB class. We have read OVER & OVER again from every analyst in the sport that Williams and Maye are number #1 and #2. Daniels is right behind at #3. Then they admit that "teams" may have a different order. Jim Harbaugh injected himself recently with a surprising projection about "his" FBS champion QB, JJ McCarthy, stating publicly that he should go #1 overall.

I had been an advocate of Bo Nix as a potential late first rounder, but began to look closer at Oregon’s offense, the reason for his high accuracy stats, and more film. I was wrong.

I had been a bit dismissive of Drake Maye due to his "stats". After closer examination (same as with Nix above), I found again… I was wrong.

So what do I do about that? Try to get it right.

I decided to do a thorough analysis of the QBs, review their offenses in more depth and use the 30-point scale to make a comparison more objective. The results were interesting if nothing else.

What does this mean? Five of these draft QB’s are ready to begin their NFL starting career sooner than later. Bo Nix may need some significant experience on developing "progressions" and other tools before doing so. I like Drake Maye because he had little support at UNC and managed some strong success. Maye has elite tools that can be put to work in a better offense. Caleb Williams was similar in that regard and is a master at "creating". McCarthy is actually a good scheme fit with one concern "deep vertical." Penix checks all the boxes yet will need to become (a QB) more involved in the run game. His coach was extremely pass oriented with 11 personnel. When it is all said and done, the difference between the top five may come down to scheme fit and intense film study. Decision-making and processing will be what makes Raheem Morris happy (see below).

My assessment is that McCarthy, Williams, and Maye may lead the pack in these intangible traits. McCarthy is an extremely capable processor. Williams has the most gifted ability to create big plays with his mental agility. Maye was saddled with a poor surrounding cast which sometimes forced him outside his comfort zone, but he still created. Daniels was surrounded with some decent OL talent but tended to stress his athleticism when under pressure. Nonetheless, his speed and mobility are difference makers. Penix demonstrated strong processing and progression vision from the pocket. When flushed outside his comfort zone, it was another story.

Penix played in Ryan Grubb’s Play/Action, attacking 11-Personnel scheme with intermediate and deep verticals. He needs work in RPO heavy-run and 12-personnel concepts for Atlanta’s current personnel. I think he can do so! Nix was a "jittery, nervous pocket passer," wherein Oregon kept things simple for him to execute. That was the plan…quick plays and simple WR isolations. It returned very good results. However, Nix will be vulnerable in the NFL with high-level defensive (disguised) concepts, superior talent, and more pressure.

Conclusion:

After considering all of the QBs and Fields, I’m not as comfortable with a Justin Fields trade now. Having said that, Kirk Cousins presents a completely different picture than Fields. Cousins is a cerebral QB that has deep roots to the Shanahan/McVay tree. He is an highly accurate decision-maker that has family ties to the Atlanta area. If they can somehow reduce his cap hit to a manageable level, he would warrant consideration.

Since Raheem Morris has more ‘time’ than Belichick would have had to build a winner/champion, he should consider going for the best long-term option this year. Top NFL analysts suggest that he should go up and get the guy he wants and pay the price.

I would think that Cousins and the top five draft QBs would fit this offense with some work and/or NFL experience. Nix is just not an early option at this point in his journey IMO.

I've been comparing video on the top QBs in the draft. It is an impressive group. Caleb Williams is head and shoulders above the rest in terms of his playmaking ability. The way he can dance around pass rushers and flick the ball downfield is truly reminiscent of Pat Mahomes. Obviously, he goes 1-1 and he's not an option unless the Bears are crazy and want to go all in on Fields.

I want to make the case here that JJ McCarthy is the second best QB in the draft. Drake Maye has been seen as a top-2 lock for 2 years, and there's a fair amount of prospect inertia with him. His film is not as impressive as McCarthy's. Both QB's are mobile and evade pressure well, and both project to be good pro QBs. I'd be happy with either, but I think McCarthy is better. The reason is that McCarthy can evade pressure, keep his eyes downfield, and make throws on the run as well as any QB in the class. He also makes corner end zone and back shoulder throws as well as anyone. He does not lock on his preferred target and seems to keep 4 receivers in his field of vision while being mindful of the rush.

If you do nothing else, watch the first and third play on this video and ask if Matt Ryan ever could've made them:

Jaden Daniels is a phenomenal athlete and he throws a great deep ball. I would be thrilled to have a chance to draft him as well, but I'm not sure he translates to the NFL as well as McCarthy.

Pittsblitz56 from over at Behind The Steel Curtain

What's going on Dirty Bird Nation? I'm reaching out in an effort to try and acquire an Atlanta GM to participate in our annual Live Mock Draft. This draft has been going on for well over a decade now and was once held on the pages of SB Nation. Our draft moved to a private site due to the volume of comments and Vox trying to work out their new commenting system. Many of our members are still active in their respective communities and often share the results from the draft itself. We currently have 25 GMs in place to take part in the 3 day event.

The draft will be held on April 12th - 14th

Round 1 will be Friday Night at 8pm (Eastern) 5 minute for pick

Rounds 2- 4 will be held Saturday starting at 1pm (Eastern) 3 minute for pick

Rounds 5-7 will be held Sunday starting at 1pm (Eastern) 2 minute for pick

The draft consists of a commissioner, draft tracker, time keeper and all things associated

We allow trades - player(s) for pick(s) and pick(s) for pick(s)

If this is something you have interest in or you know of a draft head that would be, please leave a comment or send your fellow Atlanta fan in this direction. I will answer any and all questions involving this event or NFL related topics. I would really appreciate anyone that has ties to the front page to maybe get this bumped for a few days. I thank you for your time!

Ok so, I put together a total CAP savings file which is based on pre-free agency numbers only. The whole idea for doing this is to look for ways to maximize our ability to be players from the beginning of free agency so nothing here pertains to post 6/1 transactions. It includes cuts, trades and possible savings from restructures and extensions.

I included everyone with savings of at least 1M (I grouped the barely over 1M rather than separately listing them) and no numbers or individuals represent my thinking we should cut or trade. I also did not include numbers where dead money was more than savings. This list simply gives the numbers and ability to run different scenarios in our heads as we begin to play the off-season GM.

With all the talk of trading for a QB and possibly including a player in the deal, no one should be off limits as possible trade compensation. This is just a complete list of all possible savings for the team. All numbers are taken from Over the CAP. I hope this copied over easy to read.

What is Morris expected to bring to turn the team around? It seems like a retread Arthur Smith hire.

He runs a different defense than Neilson did, Zac Robinson is the expected choice of offensive coordinator.

Is he going to run the defense or let a coordinator actually run it.

Just seems like the same ol…same ol

Fan beliefs:

· Mr. Blank seems hell bent on a "veteran head coach hire". Presumably his leading preference is Bill Belichick.

· Rich McKay ‘appears’ to be against the move as Bill Belichick is demanding more control than McKay is willing to concede, and there are rumors of bad blood between the two key figures from the past.

· This debacle has led to a serious delay in the hire and may have chilled motivations for Belichick. Will he begin to look elsewhere? Have other teams begun to express interest in BB?

· As the process has unfolded, the Falcons’ HC search has now set an NFL record with 14 or more candidates being considered and several receiving two interviews. On top of that, Jim Harbaugh just accepted the HC position for the LA Chargers.

· We are all asking what next?

Considering that Rich McKay has probably been Mr. Blank’s most trusted confidant during AB’s tenure as the team owner, we all understand the dilemma for AB considering his loyalty to Rich McKay. But given that this HC hire may well be AB’s last big move prior to his inevitable retirement, he needs to make the decision that is best for himself, the team, and the fans. No one wants to live their golden years with major regrets.

As we review updated reports, it would appear that some never-head coach experienced candidates have received very warm receptions from the Falcons brass, notably Bobby Slowik and Mike MacDonald. Who knows, maybe McKay can keep his job and make AB happy.

In the end, if AB is convinced that BB is the "right" choice for almost all concerned, he needs to make that happen. Rooney guidelines have been met. If it is that truly important to AB, why would a loyal subordinate like McKay stand in the way of Mr. Blank’s happiness? I believe Rich is a good man and highly respected. I know his sister and family well and he is loved by all. I find it difficult to believe that Rich McKay would not concede to his boss’s desire. I actually believe that McKay would step aside if he thought BB was Mr. Blank’s favorite and only choice.

So, that’s why they’re crossing all T’s and dotting the I’s. No matter the outcome, all of these loyal compatriots (no pun intended) will make a final decision that they can all live with.

· Hire the HC that makes the owner happy… a veteran HC. Belichick, Harbaugh (the fan’s top choice, but now impossible), or Raheem Morris. I don’t think that Weaver fits the billing of HC. McCarthy’s belligerent attitude toward his players as a HC makes him a no-go IMHO.

· Sign a free agent or trade for a veteran QB to accelerate Mr. Blank’s quest for a Super Bowl win sooner rather than later. Cousins (F/A) or Fields (Trade) would make the most sense. Incidentally, Cousins has stated publicly that he would "be honored to play for the GOAT (Belichick) in Atlanta where he has family ties".

· I would expect them to retain Ridder as a QB2, but with his propensity for turnovers, that is even in doubt. They might consider signing Cam Newton as QB2 if the HC is the GOAT. Cam has expressed publicly that he’d return to play for Belichick (per Bleacher Report, JAN 23, 2024) in Atlanta where he currently lives with his family. Cam would be helpful if they were developing a new QB like Daniels, Williams, or Nix (the three best scheme fits in this draft) OR a developmental late rounder like Jordan Travis. Who fits the scheme. 2025 will also offer about a half dozen superb fits for the ATL. If they pass on a QB in this draft, they will have some strong options in 2025 to learn from Cousins and whomever.

Signing the best available free agent QB (Kirk Cousins) would be smart and accelerate the Falcons’ ascension IMO. He is the 9th ranked QB for 2023 (per PFF.com); 7th ranked passer. Cousins is considered an even-keeled leader, very popular in the locker room, and has a strong football-IQ and emotional intelligence. One surprising trait is a lack of personal ego. He is certainly not a prima donna. If they sign him, priority #1 is complete.

Next… they build out the roster with emphasis on a few holes.

Starting Needs: EDGE/OLB, CB2, WR2, NT/DT1, and LS.

Depth Needs: QB2, NCB/STAR (CB3), iOL depth, RB3, and FB. Resign OT Norton.

Let’s assume they sign a F/A LS and FB.

In dozens of MOCKs they suggest there’s about an 80% probability that 3 QB’s will go in the first 8 picks (including the Falcons). So, if our QB1 issue is solved with a Cousins signing, a "trade down" for additional assets is a worthy consideration should they wish to do so. In mocks there have been plenty of teams that move up to #8 for a QB, OT, CB, or WR depending upon how the chips fall. I saw very few that had teams moving up for EDGE players. So, if the Falcons trade back, they are likely to land a starting EDGE. I also believe that Carter’s time is likely to be over in the ATL.

NOTE: We still do not know whether ATL picks up a 3rd or 2nd rounder from JAX for Ridley, since he has yet to re-sign with the Jags. Let’s assume the 3rd as a worst-case scenario (#96).

MOCK 3.0 --- JAX trades #17 + #48 + #116 + 2025 3rd to the Falcons for #8 + #145. Ridley hitting F/A means JAX sends #96 to the Falcons. FYI – Following the draft trade, Jacksonville drafted WR Malik Nabers @ #8.

Baker Mayfield just finished his first season on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The former OSU quarterback led a team that many thought would finish well below .500, to an NFC South Divisional title and, a post-season run. They lost this past weekend against the surging Detroit Lions.

While Baker Mayfield has bounced around a bit, I hate the idea that Baker has been some floundering QB that just couldn't put it together. Baker has shown that he deserves a spot in the NFL since he was drafted. He simply went to the two worst franchises in the league. The Browns, being the previous most incompetent and, the Panthers actively serving in that role. He ended the Browns playoff drought and, really only faltered when he played injured. The Browns then rewarded him by making and unprecedented move for Watson, trading Baker to a crumbling organization (since Tepper took over). The Watson contract, fully guaranteed for $250 million, completely reset the market. It was the only way a franchise in poverty could swing Watson away from Atlanta. They calculated wrong though. You can see just how ridiculous this move was by how quickly the quarterback market reset. Quarterbacks such as Jalen Hurts and, Lamar Jackson signed lesser deals leaving the Browns on an island. Further, Watson has underperformed or, been unavailable making the deal even worse. Some claim collusion which I believe is true in some sense. Moreso, I believe the Browns just offered a befuddling contract that no one would match. If someone offers $200,00 for a Toyota Camry that doesn’t mean you have to as well, especially when you can buy a much nicer car for $100,000. All this to say that the Browns moved on from Baker and, then had to watch him take the Bucs (with less talent) to the playoffs this year. Baker finished his time in Cleveland with a 30-30 record, including his playoff win.

The former Sooner’s next stop was in Carolina. The Browns traded Mayfield to the Panthers on July 6th just before training camp. The team had gone 5-12 the season before in a season where Sam Darnold led the team. The Panthers traded a 6th round pick that year, plus a 2022 2nd and, a 2022 4th round pick to acquire Sam Darnold if that tells you anything. Baker beat out Darnold and, was named the starter on August 22, 2022. In the first five games the Panthers went 1-4 and, subsequently Head Coach Matt Rhule was fired after their fourth loss. Additionally, Mayfield was injured while playing the next game sustaining a high ankle sprain. Christian McCaffery would be traded to the San Francisco 49ers the following week. With the injury and, the team around him crumbling, Baker requested his release. He ended his stint there with a 1-5 record. The Carolina Panthers went on to improve to a 7-10 record under interim Head Coach Steve Wilks but, I believe this was "wrong place, wrong time" for Baker Mayfield.

His final stop before Tampa Bay was in that same season. The day after the Carolina Panthers released him, the Los Angeles Rams claimed him off waivers. Mayfield replaced John Wofford a couple of days later in the Ram’s week 14 game, against the Las Vegas Raiders. Baker completed 22 of 35 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown. He also led a 98-yard drive with 1:45 minutes left in the game, which was capped with a 23-yard touchdown pass to our very own Van Jefferson. Baker would win one more game as a Ram in week 16 against the Denver Broncos. The Rams would finish with a 5-12 record on the year. Although, his win total on the year wasn’t great, his immediate success (in clutch moments) with the Rams shows it was not a Baker issue (at least in my opinion). The Rams were also depleted after going all in for the Superbowl the previous year.

Baker Mayfield record (including playoffs):

Cleveland Browns: 30-30

Carolina Panthers: 1-5

Los Angeles Rams: 2-3

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 10-9

43-47 (2 playoff wins)

I’m not exactly clamoring for Baker in Atlanta but, if the Buccaneers don’t re-sign him, Atlanta should at least kick the tires on him (or plunder if you will). I don’t have any ties to Baker other than a friend who is a Browns fan. Like many 1st overall picks, the situation was not great for Baker coming into the league. Still, he has found a way to find success in circumstances that would bury many others. From a 3-star recruit, to a walk-on at OSU, to a Heisman winner, Baker has shown grit in college and the pros. He played well with the big-bodied receiver Mike Evans, who many compared Drake London to in the draft. If he makes it to free agency, we could do much worse in Atlanta. Or maybe, the Bucs will make the same mistake as the Browns & Panthers, swinging big for a quarterback that underperforms, while letting Mayfield leave the NFC South.

I've been wanting the Falcons to win the Super Bowl since the 1980 season when the Falcons lost in the divisional round on a last second pass from Staubach to Drew Pearson. 44 years and counting, As badly as I want a Super Bowl, I wouldn't want it with Belichick as a coach.

There have been many articles detailing why he's not a good fit for the team from a football standpoint. However, Belichick, the man, is problematic.

1) Deflategate. Underinflating balls to help his QB. Widely documented.

2) Spygate. Filming his opponents practices. Widely documented.

3) Aaron Hernandez. The Patriots provided an apartment for Hernandez to hide when he was wanted for murder. As coach and GM, there's no way Belichick wouldn't have known about team security doing this. Per Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez on Netflix.

This all reeks of personal character flaws. If Arthur Smith, Dan Quinn, Mike Smith, etc had done these types of things, they would have never been hired. Belichick won so he gets a pass. All the talk of character from Blank over the years means nothing if Belichick is the next head coach.
