The case for JJ McCarthy at #8

I've been comparing video on the top QBs in the draft. It is an impressive group. Caleb Williams is head and shoulders above the rest in terms of his playmaking ability. The way he can dance around pass rushers and flick the ball downfield is truly reminiscent of Pat Mahomes. Obviously, he goes 1-1 and he's not an option unless the Bears are crazy and want to go all in on Fields.

I want to make the case here that JJ McCarthy is the second best QB in the draft. Drake Maye has been seen as a top-2 lock for 2 years, and there's a fair amount of prospect inertia with him. His film is not as impressive as McCarthy's. Both QB's are mobile and evade pressure well, and both project to be good pro QBs. I'd be happy with either, but I think McCarthy is better. The reason is that McCarthy can evade pressure, keep his eyes downfield, and make throws on the run as well as any QB in the class. He also makes corner end zone and back shoulder throws as well as anyone. He does not lock on his preferred target and seems to keep 4 receivers in his field of vision while being mindful of the rush.

If you do nothing else, watch the first and third play on this video and ask if Matt Ryan ever could've made them:

Jaden Daniels is a phenomenal athlete and he throws a great deep ball. I would be thrilled to have a chance to draft him as well, but I'm not sure he translates to the NFL as well as McCarthy.
