If I weren’t a longtime Falcons fan (I’ve been willingly subjecting myself to this team’s shenanigans for 18 years now), I might have trouble believing the confidence graph below reflects the perspectives of fans of a team that’s currently at the top of its division.
But I am a longtime Falcons fan, and like the rest of you, I’ve lived on this particular roller coaster this season.
As I expected, Atlanta’s 24-15 win over the hated Saints in Week 12 gave fans’ confidence a bit of a boost. But with the team’s up-and-down performance this season, it certainly makes sense to me that fans are being relatively reserved in their enthusiasm about the Falcons’ current spot on top of the NFC South.
A lot of that up-and-down performance this season has been connected to quarterback play and coaching decisions. So even though the team just spent a third-round pick on Desmond Ridder two years ago, most fans would like to see the team invest an even higher draft pick in a quarterback in the 2024 draft.
Obviously we’re weeks from knowing what the Falcons’ draft position will be, but assuming they’re about middle of the pack, they’re likely out of the running for the bigger names in this class like Caleb Williams and Drake Maye. They might have a shot at someone like Michigan’s JJ McCarthy (as much as that pains me to write as an Ohio State fan, but at least McCarthy grew up loving the Buckeyes) or LSU’s Jayden Daniels, and I particularly like Daniels as a prospect.
Finally, we wanted to know your prediction for the Falcons’ divisional record through the end of the season, and the majority of fans (47%) believe Atlanta will finish 5-1 in the NFC South. I love the optimism.
