The crazy things about this defense.

We all know these things about the defense:

No pass rush

No run defense

Mind-bendingly bad in the Red Zone

Massive talent deficit

Awful tackling

A few things, however, I find hard to understand.

I watch at least half the games every week on Game Pass, so I average seeing at least 16 teams play each week.

Things I see with the Falcons defense I see nowhere else:

Defenders taking out other defenders. I mean our players look like Keystone Kops half the time, running over each other, hitting each other, etc. The number of times we have two guys in position to make a play and one takes the other out so nobody makes the play is astounding. I can’t understand why we are so far and away worse than any other team at that.

Zone defense - I understand zone defense to mean you are assigned to defend an area of the field and if a player enters said zone you cover him. Our defense does not do that. They literally will stand 3-4 yards from an opponent and wait until that player catches the pass to make a move. No other teams play like that. Can anyone explain the strategy behind making absolutely no effort to prevent an opponent from catching a pass at all?

P.S. I have been heavily critical of AS and his staff this season, but after watching the utter ineptitude against the Saints I think AS deserves Coach of the Year consideration for squeezing 7 wins out of this team. The Falcons are a truly putrid team right now.
