Falcoholinks: All the Falcons news you need for Wednesday, Sept. 8

LIIIINKS

NFL: Cleveland Browns at Atlanta Falcons Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

It’s game week, ya’ll! Dive in for some links on a Wednesday as you mentally prepare for Sunday’s clash against the Eagles.

Homegrown & rising

Say what you will about the Dimitroff Era, but he was at the helm when the Falcons made some clutch late-round selections in the draft. The defensive dominance that is Grady Jarrett is well-regarded around the league, and in his prime, the former fifth-rounder is as destructive as ever.

Wide receiver Russell Gage is another one of those end-of-draft picks that’s worked out for Atlanta, and he appears on the ascend in a new offense where he will likely be featured even more.

And Foye Oluokun? Well, it’s time that he’s rightfully recognized as the next defensive star on the Falcons.

Depth chart revealed

The Falcons released their official depth chart ahead of Week 1. With that considered: There are still some shakeups that could happen between now and Sunday.

Roster moves ahead of Week 1

With the Falcons opening tilt against the Eagles only a few days away, there have of course been some roster additions and subtractions. Highlighting those would be recently-cut running back Qadree Ollison’s assignment to the practice squad, as well as corner Kendall Sheffield landing on IR. Left guard Josh Andrews was also placed on injured reserve due to a broken hand, and coach Arthur Smith has expressed his confidence in rookie Jaylen Mayfield starting at that spot on Sunday.

Other moves include:

The signing of former Raiders and Jaguars receiver Keelan Doss, and the subsequent cut of running back D’Onta Foreman.

LB James Vaughters was inked and placed on the practice squad.

What about Wayne?

Running back Wayne Gallman was added to the roster last week — so what exactly are the Falcons getting with the former fourth-rounder and Clemson back?

Cap Hell a factor

To say the Falcons are in a sketchy position when it comes to cap space is an understatement, and it’s one that will loom over the entirety of the 2021 NFL season.
