We’ve got a Falcoholized edition of the links today, mainly because I dropped the ball on Memorial Day weekend and forgot what day it was — But also because there’s been a lot of news! Dive on in.
The Falcons have a number of positions that will come down to camp competition, and we’ve dialed in on the ones to keep your eye on as offseason activities continue to ramp up.
The situation at left guard
Left guard has been a veritable black hole for Atlanta since Andy Levitre’s departure — one that they spent a boatload of money on to address to no avail. The team signed OG Josh Andrews this offseason, and he’s reportedly getting a lot of early run at the spot.
Coach Smith on Fowler, Jones
Less than a week away from mandatory minicamp, Atlanta Falcons HC Arthur Smith provided some insight on what to expect — and who might be expected to attend. He seemed confident that Dante Fowler would be in the building, but he was far vaguer on Julio Jones’ status.
And as we’re now post-June 1, we may begin some actual movement on a Julio Jones trade.
Marlon Davidson impressing
2020 second-round pick Marlon Davidson had an inauspicious debut at the NFL-level. Between a stint on the COVID-19/Reserve list and injury, his initial campaign might be considered a wash — but apparently he’s impressed in the early part of the offseason.
The Falcons bet big on their offensive potential in the 2021 NFL Draft by taking potential generational talent Kyle Pitts. Even with Julio Jones likely out the door, Atlanta is well-positioned offensively in the coming season — and banking on their offense is the right move if they hope to win right now.
Younghoe Koo had a breakout season as Atlanta’s kicker last year, and it’s safe to say that he’s a vast improvement over what new head coach Arthur Smith is used to.
CB Fabian Moreau to compete for starting job
The Falcons brought in veteran cornerback Fabian Moreau on a one-year deal, and now it’s looking like he’s competing for one of the Falcons’ starting spots outside.
Post-draft roster previews: Tight ends & quarterbacks
This position group was the biggest beneficiary of the 2021 NFL Draft, as the Falcons added top-flight talent Kyle Pitts. Even on the heels of a middling first season in Atlanta from Hayden Hurst, the Falcons’ TE group should be in a solid position to succeed this season.
And Kyle Pitts? Yeah, he will be a critical piece in the red zone.
As for the quarterbacks group, it was one we were uncertain about until the 2021 NFL Draft took place. There was a real shot that the Falcons could select Matt Ryan’s successor, but he’s poised to start the season under center once again.
