Falcoholinks: All the Falcons news you need for Friday, Apr. 16

It’s Friday and we’ve got a metric ton of draft-heavy links for you. Dive on in.

Free agent signings and a surprise departure

The Falcons made a couple of savvy moves in free agency yesterday by inking wide receiver and kick return ace Cordarrelle Patterson and veteran safety Duron Harmon.

Both are additions that provide an experienced presence at each respective position and will assist Atlanta in filling out its defensive secondary — as well as locking in a go-to guy on return duty.

Shortly thereafter, the Falcons made a surprise move by releasing three-year Falcon Ito Smith. With the additions of Mike Davis and Cordarelle Patterson, it seems the new regime felt they were clear to move on from Smith.

The NFL Draft and the quarterback question

In the wake of Matt Ryan’s recently restructured contract that cleared some cap space for the Falcons to pay their parking tickets, the immediate question was if a quarterback was still in play at No. 4. Long-time NFL reporter Peter King doesn’t think the Falcons will force a quarterback at that slate on the draft board.

Should they decide to address a different position at that spot, the Falcons should go all-in on quarterback Matt Ryan, our Cory Woodroof maintains.

It remains a historically great spot to be snagging a draft pick, regardless of the direction the team decides to head. The new Smith/Fontenot regime has the opportunity to shape the franchise for the long-term future, and it’s important to keep that in mind amidst the swirling draft rumors.

What happens on draft night is anybody’s guess, but ESPN’s Mel Kiper sees Atlanta taking North Dakota quarterback Trey Lance — as does our Eric Robinson, who selected Lance in SB Nation’s mock draft.

Also worth noting: The Falcons sent an armada to watch Justin Fields’ second Pro Day. Draft stuff, man. Wild.

The Falcoholic’s favorite Day 2 picks

So who does the staff like on the 2021 NFL Draft’s second day? We’ve got you on this roundtable.

Scouting report: Patrick Surtain II

Could the Falcons pair second-year corner A.J. Terrell with one of the top cornerback prospects in the 2021 NFL Draft? Don’t rule it out.

Our Eric Robinson has his take on Alabama’s Patrick Surtain II in his latest scouting report — an addition that would give Atlanta one of the best young corner duos in the NFL.

TE Ryan Becker added

A minor move, but a move nonetheless! Earlier in the week, the Falcons added tight end Ryan Becker, former UDFA out of SMU who enjoyed a cup of coffee with the Arizona Cardinals during rookie camp.

He’ll compete for a reserve spot on the roster.
