First-round options

This offseason series is laser-focused on the 2021 NFL Draft, and we’ve been rolling through the cost/benefits of different positions for Atlanta’s first-round pick. This week we drilled down on defense, starting with the linebacker spot.

We then moved on to the secondary, and examined why it would make sense to draft a corner in the first-round, and why the talent at safety means the Falcons should probably wait.

For what it’s worth, NFL Network’s Steve Wyche believes the Falcons will trade down and focus on the trenches.

Brief histories

Bouncing off the defensive theme of the options in the first-round, we’ve been looking at the players drafted by position, and this week Evan Birchfield examined the first-round running backs selected since 2010.

MOOOOOCKS

The Falcoholic seven-round mock version 3.0 is now live, and it features a trade in the first to load up on second-rounders.

How are we gonna afford all this?!

It’s no secret that the Falcons aren’t exactly in prime positioning cap-wise to do the bulk of their offseason work in free agency, but with their current situation in mind we mapped out an affordable free agency period for Atlanta.

Recently released defensive tackle Jurrell Casey could also fit the bill — especially with his history with new DC Dean Pees — but it will come down to cost in the end.

We also took a look at some surprising in-house moves Atlanta could make this offseason.

Scouting reports

North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance is one of the most intriguing prospects heading into the 2021 NFL Draft, and our Everett Glaze broke down his game in his latest scouting report. Ditto BYU’s Zach Wilson, another quarterback sure to be on the Falcons’ board.

Eric Robinson flipped to the defense in his latest scouting report by taking a look at one of the draft’s top edge defenders.
