What does the future hold for the Falcons and Matt Ryan?

Will the QB who holds every franchise record be in Atlanta in 2021?

With the Falcons season now over and a new regime slated to take over, the predominant question on the mind of all fans is what happens with Matt Ryan. This season has been an erratic one for Ryan, even as he posted solid overall numbers. The fanbase - needless to say - is all over the place. Some are ready to move on while others are quick to blame Dirk Koetter for the disappointing offense. Let’s take a look at the realistic options and get your feedback for use in a future podcast.

Ryan retires a Falcon after 3 to 4 more years

Of all the options, this one seems the least likely right now but it’s not impossible. Ryan will turn 36 next year and plenty of quarterbacks have played at a very high level into their late 30s. Given what he has meant to this franchise, and the fondness that Arthur Blank has for him, the next GM and head coach may feel that a competent offensive system is all that this team needs to compete yet again. That top 4 pick may be better spent on a defensive player who can help turn this pass rush around.

Falcons draft a QB, Ryan here for 1 or 2 more years

The last time the Falcons had a pick in the top 5 was 2008 ... when they drafted Ryan. He is in his mid-30s and hell, even the Packers drafted a QB in the draft last year to sit behind Aaron Rodgers. Ryan likely has plenty left in the tank for at least a few more years, giving a new coach and GM the ability to win games now while also finding the heir apparent. You also get the benefit of being able to sit a rookie QB (ala Rodgers in Green Bay) for a year or two while they learn the ropes from a future hall of famer.

Falcons draft a QB, trade Ryan

In this scenario, the Falcons go ahead and take one of the QBs in this draft class but decide to immediately commit to him. While the dead money hit would be painful, it’s not impossible that Ryan could be traded. Many people have openly wondered if the 49ers wouldn’t mind reuniting Ryan with Kyle Shanahan, given the incredible 2016 season they put together. The Falcons begin a rebuild with a young QB and pick up some trade compensation immediately for a player with plenty of tread left.
