The Falcons went to 0-2 for the first time in the Matt Ryan era. Yet, the offense put up 39 points and it’s hard to fault them for what transpired on Sunday. An offense that is bale to put up that many points should consistently win games, and yet we’re here staring at an 0-1 record and wondering what went wrong. Let’s celebrate the positives out of this game as we vote for the offensive player of the game.
Calvin Ridley
The Falcons have found yet another star wide receiver in Ridley. He finished the day with 7 catches for 109 yards and 2 touchdowns, but more than anything, he’s someone who can consistently take advantage of the favorable match-ups that Julio Jones affords him. He’s been a touchdown machine since entering the league and it’s good to see him coming into his own in year 3.
Matt Ryan
Going 24 of 36 for 273 yards and 4 touchdowns with no interceptions should be enough. Yet, the Falcons continue to let this franchise QB down with disastrous defensive performances that injures his “QB Winz” statistics year after year. Ryan was sharp (minus a few deep throws) and he was one of the few reasons this team was even in this game to begin with. He deserves better than this horse crap.
Russell Gage
When you consider that he was a 6th round pick who was expected to be nothing more than a special teams specialist, the development of Gage over the last two years has been nothing short of outstanding. He’s a legitimate WR3 who Ryan clearly trusts. With 6 receptions for 46 yards and a touchdown on Sunday, Gage showed that he can take advantage of the favorable matchups that Ridley and Jones afford him, even if he did have an early drop.
Matt Gono
After Kaleb McGary went down with an injury, the undrafted OT had to step in. He played superbly in pass blocking and made the offensive line look legitimate. It makes you wonder why this guy couldn’t find more playing time before now.
