John Wetzel continues endless journey, re-joins Falcons roster

He’s on the roster and off the roster and on the roster and off the roster and on the roster and off the roster and you get the point.

When the Falcons announced they were cutting ties with Timon Parris, the tackle they plucked off the waiver wire following teams cutting down to their 53 man rosters, the smart bet was that he’d be replaced with John Wetzel. This is what the Falcons do with Wetzel: They capriciously sign him to the roster and cut him, and he either ends up on the practice squad or just returns a few weeks later like a restless spirit.

It’s gotten to the point where it’s impossible not to root for Wetzel to stick with this team, so hopefully this is the last transaction involving him we’ll have cause to share in 2020.

Wetzel has 42 games under his belt in the NFL, including 24 starts, and can play guard and tackle, the kind of versatility that will be useful to the Falcons if injuries become a factor later on. It may only take a couple of roster moves for Atlanta to bounce him around again, but Wetzel is the kind of player you want to have at the back of your roster, given that he has starting experience and does multiple things pretty well.

Parris, meanwhile, is probably headed for the practice squad in place of Wetzel. The Falcons liked him enough to pick him up following cutdown, so it’s a fair bet they’d like more time to develop him. We’ll find out about that soon enough.
