Report: Matt Ryan is participating in workouts in California this week

It must be an interesting time to be a franchise quarterback. But let’s be honest, as franchise quarterbacks go, Matthew Thomas Ryan is the bee’s knees. He’s a consummate professional that goes above and beyond to be the best player he can be. We’ve seen this theme play out over and over throughout Ryan’s 12+ years as a professional football player. That’s probably why he’s thrown for 4,000+ yards in 9 straight seasons. (Just saying.)

So how do you prepare for a season that’s in doubt because there’s currently a global pandemic? Well, if you’re Matt Ryan, you figure it out ... safely. We learned earlier this week that Ryan travelled to California for workouts this week. Here’s what the talented Vaughn McClure had to say about it:

I’m told Matt Ryan has guys working out in California this week. He has done that in the past, throwing to now-departed Austin Hooper at Golden West College in Huntington Beach the last few offseasons. Ryan trains with Adam Dedeaux, Tom House of 3DQB in Southern California. New Falcons tight end Hayden Hurst told ESPN’s Mina Kimes he had been driving back and forth from Jacksonville to Atlanta to work with Ryan. In Cali, Ryan might be able to connect with Julio Jones, Todd Gurley, among others.

It sounds like Ryan is preparing for the season to the best of his ability. Headed into his 13th season of professional football, he can’t afford to take his foot off the gas. With a Super Bowl “window” that’s ostensibly closing sooner rather than later, he can’t afford to miss out on any opportunities to get better. Eventually Flowery Branch will open back up to players and Ryan will get back to his normal preparation for the season. In the interim, it’s welcome news that he is taking the initiative to keep these informal workouts going.
