A year ago, Desmond Trufant led the Atlanta Falcons in interceptions, something I suspected might never happen. The year before that, it was Damontae Kazee, and before that Deion Jones. Who will it be this year?
There are more contenders than may appear at first blush. Rookie A.J. Terrell picked three passes in 2018 and plays the ball well enough to create more turnovers in the NFL than he did for Clemson. I’m not betting on Isaiah Oliver and Kendall Sheffield to take the leap there, but Terrell should be considered a dark horse.
Beyond that, you have Jones and Kazee looking to repeat their single season runs (particularly Kazee and his magical 7 interception campaign), Keanu Neal and Ricardo Allen always threats to contribute, and Marlon Davidson probably will get his mitts on one given how often he bats passes at the line of scrimmage. My bet would be Jones—he’s done it multiple times before—but it’s fairly wide open this year.
This still doesn’t look like a particularly pick-happy defense, but we’ll hope for a pleasant surprise. As you roll your way through Sunday afternoon, tell us who you think will lead the team in interceptions, and then talk about whatever Falcons-related topics tickle your fancy.
