The Falcons defense has subtracted Vic Beasley, Desmond Trufant, and De’Vondre Campbell, among others. To make up for that, they added Dante Fowler, A.J. Terrell, Marlon Davidson, and Mykal Walker, again among others. Raheem Morris is the defensive coordinator now after Dan Quinn’s disastrous half-season stewardship, so the changes have legitimately been significant on that side of the ball.
Will that translate into actual improvement? We’ve spent a fair amount of time talking about the defense—and there’s much more to come—but not much time talking about whether or not we’re actually going to see the kind of capable defense we’ve been chomping at the bit for...well, basically forever. It’s a question of whether the second half uptick is sustainable, and whether the new additions are better than the outgoing players, something I think it’s hard to be certain about in May.
For your Sunday afternoon open thread, I welcome your thoughts and spirited debate on the topic. Enjoy!
