Lots of news and notes on the Falcons from over the weekend. Falcons free agency was highlighted by the signings of Dante Fowler and Todd Gurley. We get into that and more in Monday’s edition of Falcoholinks.

Exit Freeman, Enter Gurley

The Falcons made a major free agent splash on Friday, inking former Ram Todd Gurley to a one-year deal. It fills the running back void for 2020, but the acquisition definitely comes with concerns.

Falcoholic scribe Adnan Ikic took a deep dive into the 2019 numbers of the Falcons’ new and former running backs. Definitely an illuminating read that details what we may expect from Todd Gurley in 2020.

With Gurley now in the fold for at least the coming season, should the Falcons still look to snag a running back in the 2020 NFL Draft?

A busy Sunday

On Sunday evening we received word that the Falcons had made a flurry of personnel moves. They are bringing back cornerback Blidi Wreh-Wilson on a one-year deal, as well as signing former first-round wide receiver Laquon Treadwell to round out the receiving corps.

They’re also bringing in versatile offensive lineman Justin McCray, most recently with the Cleveland Browns.

Hayden & Hooper

So what exactly are the Falcons getting in Hayden Hurst? Dave Choate examined what his 2019 numbers would have looked like had he received the volume of targets that Austin Hooper did.

State of the roster

We learned yesterday that the Falcons likely cleared some cap space by restructuring the contracts of Jake Matthews and Matt Ryan, potentially portending another free agent move. After the first wave of free agency, they still have some holes that they can fill.

There were also a couple of re-signings and procedural moves — namely cutting and re-signing punter Ryan Allen a la John Wetzel and bringing back safety Sharrod Neasman.

Quarantinecasts

It’s really easy to start going stir crazy when you’re cooped up in your house. Hell, it’s been only a few days and I’ve already cleaned more than I have in the past six months. I scrubbed the baseboards.

We know there’s some cabin fever setting in, so we uncorked some extra podcast and Falcoholic Live content to keep you entertained and stave off the boredom.

The gang got together to discuss the acquisition of defensive end Dante Fowler and discuss the implications of Tom Brady’s arrival in Tampa Bay. That Falcons podcast can be heard right here. We also broke out the wine and talked about about the departures of Devonta Freeman and Desmond Trufant.

On the 101st episode of The Falcoholic Live, Kevin Knight and Co. ran through all of the news over a busy free agency week.

And last and certainly not least, in the latest edition of our “Getting to know the writers” series, David Walker had a chat with long-time Falcoholic writer James Rael.
