This signals a couple of things for the Falcons. The first is that speedy Russell Gage is probably the strong favorite for #3 duties, as Treadwell is a slower, taller possession receiver who probably slots in as a natural fourth option. The second is that the Falcons were looking for size more than speed, and if they want another speedster they’ll hit the draft.
Per NFL league source... Falcons are signing former Minnesota Vikings WR Laquon Treadwell - Was a first round pick in 2016.. played 13-games last season for Vikings pic.twitter.com/J4hCLZqKFL— Zach Klein (@ZachKleinWSB) March 22, 2020
As if the Falcons’ offense wasn’t already looking impressive with the recent additions of running back Todd Gurley and tight end Hayden Hurst, Treadwell has the look of someone who could become another effective weapon in the star-studded Atlanta offensive cast.
The 24-year old wide receiver out of Ole Miss was selected in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Vikings at pick 23. It’s safe to say that Treadwell was a bust for the Vikings, as he’s only scored two touchdowns 53 games and was even released by the team last season before they eventually brought him back.
Although the financial side of things is currently unknown, it’s another low-risk, potentially high reward signing for the Falcons. Treadwell was a standout at Ole Miss and was viewed as one of the best receivers in the country. The Falcons are hoping he’ll return to that form.
However, Treadwell is still going to have to earn his spot as the Falcons offseason roster currently has Julio Jones, Calvin Ridley, Olamide Zaccheaus, Devin Gray, Russell Gage, Brandon Powell and Christian Blake.
