Falcons free agency 2020: Your open thread and news roundup for the first day

Atlanta’s likely to make a day 1 splash, even if it’s a minor one, before getting down the business of filling out the roster.

When 4 p.m. rolls around today, the league year will be in full swing and all the moves you’ve been hearing about for days can be confirmed. That means Tom Brady to Tampa Bay, Teddy Bridgewater to Carolina, and most importantly Hayden Hurst to Atlanta are all on the docket for the afternoon.

If recent history holds, the Falcons will also have a signing waiting for us this evening, or we’ll at least catch wind of one coming up. Especially with limited cap space, if there are players Atlanta wants they’re going to need to strike pretty quickly, filling in gaps in the roster post-draft with guys who shake loose from other teams over time. If that sounds a little depressing in its broad contours, it’s because the Falcons don’t appear to have a ton of money to work with and this offseason has generally been pretty glum. Perhaps that changes soon.

Things to look for today:

  • Desmond Trufant’s official release. This has been reported but the team may be waiting a bit on it because it’s a post-June 1 release that they can’t officially announce until today.
  • A signing of some sort. I’d love to be more specific—and I’ll guess an edge rusher—but the Falcons don’t have much cap space and the market at that position is thinning quickly. I do expect the Falcons to make one, and likely only one, quick signing to help shore up a roster that has a worrying number of holes.
  • We see a number of players we might’ve wanted on the Falcons headed elsewhere.

Regardless of what happens, use this as your open thread for the day. We’ll update with rumors and reports as we see them.
