Falcons sign WR Greg Dortch to practice squad

He’s taking the place of speedy receiver/returner Chris Rowland, who was promoted to the roster.

The Falcons can’t get enough of speedy receivers with special teams value, apparently, because they’ve added another one to their practice squad.

This time, it’s Greg Dortch, who joins Brandon Powell, Olamide Zaccheaus, and Chris Rowland as players that fit that bill either on the roster or the practice squad. Zaccheaus is currently on injured reserve, Powell took a backseat in the return game to Rowland after the latter was flexed to the roster, and Powell may be in the doghouse after fumbling away a catch against the Chiefs. Dortch might find himself active for Week 17, is what I’m getting at. Rowland has a lot of promise but was pretty quiet against the Chiefs in Week 16.

Dortch, 22, has played two games in the NFL for the Panthers and has otherwise bounced around. He has 4 punt returns for 28 yards and 5 kick returns for 119 yards. A fumbled return against the Falcons sparked the Panthers to cut him last year, but he remains an interesting player who was a factor as a receiver (142 receptions, 1,800 yards, and 17 touchdowns in two years at Wake Forest) and as a returner (45 punt returns for 438 yards, 36 kick returns for 773 yards). Hopefully he can use this practice squad spot as a springboard to a gig with the Falcons in 2021.

Welcome aboard, Greg Dortch!
