Despite blowing yet another big lead in 2020, the latest Falcons loss did present us with some positive takeaways. Depending on what your focus is, you may have a differing opinion on what exactly that is. Is it the continued big season from Calvin Ridley or a nice bounce back game from Matt Ryan? Perhaps you’re focused on the 2021 draft and the implications for that. Let’s take a look at some options.
Calvin Ridley’s big game
With Julio Jones missing another game, all eyes continued to be on Calvin Ridley and he rose to the occasion yet again. With 10 receptions on 14 targets, he collected 163 yards and a touchdown in the frustrating loss. He wasn’t perfect, but it’s clear that his rapport with Ryan has grown tremendously and he is more than capable of being the lead receiver in an NFL offense. Let’s hope we get to see him paired with a competent OC in 2021.
Matt Ryan bounce back
After a disastrous game against the Chargers, Ryan reminded fans he is still a more than capable QB on Sunday. Going 34 of 49 for 356 yards with 3 touchdowns and no turnovers, Ryan was back to throwing accurately for most of the game, though he probably has a few he would like back. He was also the second leading rusher on the team, which tells you more about where the offensive failures were on Sunday.
Maintaining good draft position for 2021
Watching Falcons fans react on twitter was quite the sight. Some relished the early beatdown of the Bucs while others were mortified that the team might win a meaningless game and impact their draft position in 2021.
As of right now, Atlanta is now in the top-5 for draft position. It’s hard to know for sure if they’re going to stay there, but finishing the season against the Chiefs and Buccaneers suggests there’s a strong chance they do.
Ensuring this staff won’t be back
With yet another collapse, any lingering thoughts of bringing back a single member of this coaching staff has to be cooked by now. There’s simply no scenario where Raheem Morris or anyone associated with this perpetual stink is going to be associated with the Falcons organization in 2021.
