The Falcons are a train wreck. Literally. There’s just no sugar coating it, because it’s that bad. Unfortunately, we’re only 4 games into the regular season, and there’s still a lot of football to be played. We have months of bad football ahead of us. Huzzah!
The Falcons will play the Panthers at home this weekend. And I won’t lie, there’s a good chance they hand us their fifth straight loss. But is that what the oddsmakers are predicting? Not exactly.
As of Tuesday night, Draftkings Sportsbook had the Falcons tabbed as 2.5 point favorites, with the over/under set at 53.5. Yes, you read that correctly: The Falcons are favored in Week 5, notwithstanding the fact that their head coach’s seat is red hot. They’re favored, notwithstanding the fact that their secondary is the functional equivalent of an old fishing net held together with duct tape. They’re favored, notwithstanding the fact that they’re off to their worst start in 20+ years.
It’s worth noting that the Panthers have only beat the spread 3 times in their last 12 games. What’s more, they haven’t beat the spread in their last 5 road matchups against the Falcons. So ... that has to count for something, right?
To be frank, I don’t understand what the oddsmakers have in mind here. The Panthers are 2-2. They’re coming off back to back wins, including a win over the Cardinals on Sunday. The Falcons will be hosting fans for the first time this season, but with limited capacity. The “home field advantage” will be negligible.
