An emblematic loss for a Falcons team that cannot find a way to close games out in 2020. Read on for Monday morning’s Falcoholinks.

Falcons - Lions recap

It happened again. This Falcons team manufactures losses like they’re built to spec and rolling down the assembly line for 2020. It’s a factory of sadness in Atlanta as they blew yet another late lead in the final seconds to the Detroit Lions, 23-22.

While the defense looked impressive in the first half, it allowed the Lions to complete a 75-yard final drive to win the game — with no timeouts. Sequences like that are why Atlanta’s defense is again on pace to finish as one of the worst in the league.

Injuries

On the injury front, Atlanta escaped this debacle relatively unscathed.

It’s looking like the Falcons may have dodged a massive bullet, as Russell Gage sustained what appeared to be a serious knee injury when he was rolled up on by a Lions defender in the first quarter. Gage was writhing in pain and walked off with the assistance of trainers, but was seen animated on the sideline in the second half and was cleared to return.

Alex Mack also briefly left the game in the first quarter but would return in short order.

Going nowhere

There’s been some social media rumblings that the Falcons are open to offloading some of their expensive talent — mainly surrounding quarterback Matt Ryan and wide receiver Julio Jones. They sounded wildly improbable as they began to circulate, and reports on Sunday debunked them as Atlanta is not looking for any kind of fire sale.

The Falcoholic Live

There was much to discuss in this week’s Falcoholic Live Postgame show — to be fair, it was more of an airing of grievances about yesterday’s loss. If you didn’t catch the live show, you can watch the entire thing right here.
