The Falcons are finally getting new uniforms. The cynic will suggest this is a ploy to distract from this team’s fortunes of late, but two things are true here:
- The uniforms have been in the works for a while, with the team saying it’s been two years;
- Even if that wasn’t the case, it’s a great ploy, because so many fans are ready for new uniforms.
The question now becomes what those uniforms will be. Given that they’ll almost certainly be re-imagining them regardless of the direction they choose, i think it’s safe to say that the red jersey, white pants, black helmet configuration we’re used to won’t be here next year.
New year. New threads.

So what will Atlanta do?
Look to the past
This one is going to be popular with fans who remember the old uniforms, or those who are newly entranced by the throwbacks. The Falcons can keep their current logo if they like, but bringing back the old one would win over old-timers.
If they go that route, they could go with the classic black jerseys and helmets, silver pants combo from the 1990s; the red helmet, red jersey and white pants combo that marked most of their early history in the league; or even the black on black they rolled out in the Michael Vick era. They could also use the black jersey, white pants, red helmet look the team rolled out in the John Abraham/Matt Ryan/Michael Turner era.
On one hand, it might seem like a cop-out to go back to the past when you’re announcing new uniforms. On the other hand, pretty much all of those were great looks, ones that would hold up as well today as they did back then, at least in this man’s humble opinion. Even with a few tweaks, I’d support reaching back into the past.
Blaze a new trail
Atlanta could also try something entirely new. That could mean new logo, new color schemes, or that blood red Color Rush from a couple of years ago resurrected and given new life.
It’s impossible to know what to think of this route until we see what the Falcons unveil, if they are indeed future-looking here. It’s also hard not to be apprehensive about it because a complete re-imagining could so easily go the direction of the Buccaneers with their alarm clock lettering and iffy design, even if I trust Atlanta to do a better job.
We turn it over to you in our poll.
