Falcons sign veteran OL Adam Gettis

The arrival of Gettis could signal the departure of another interior lineman.

The Falcons are almost certainly not done tweaking their offensive line, but their latest reported signing is hardly the kind of seismic shakeup that a rookie backup center or rookie right tackle would be. It does indicate that the Falcons could choose to go in a different direction than the one we assumed with their interior depth, which as of the moment consists of veterans Wes Schweitzer and Brandon Fusco and former draft pick Sean Harlow.

Adam Gettis, the soon-to-be signee in question, has played in 17 games with one start over stints with Washington, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, and the New York Giants. Gettis last played in an actual NFL game back in 2016, as he was on the shelf with an injury in 2017 and didn’t play last year. The former fifth round draft pick has chiefly played guard in the NFL but can, reputedly, also play center. Critically, he spent time with Dirk Koetter and the Bucs the last two years, even if he didn’t ultimately play.

If Gettis is healthy and the Falcons are intrigued enough to bring him aboard now, there’s a chance he could push for the final spot on the Falcons’ offensive line in 2019. The ability to play center would make him a logical candidate for the backup job behind Alex Mack, albeit not one that inspires a ton of early confidence, and at worst he’s insurance for if the Falcons don’t touch the interior of the line in the draft. If he does stick around, he could bump Brandon Fusco or Wes Schweitzer off the roster, as those are the two early candidates for reserve roles on the interior and the Falcons aren’t very likely to carry five guards on the active roster this year. The Falcons, as you’ll recall, are very fond of bringing in veterans who have washed out elsewhere and seeing if they can shore up the line, so don’t count Gettis out yet.

All of that is in the future, though, including confirmation of the signing. We’ll wait to see if and when Gettis does sign, but we preemptively welcome him aboard.

UPDATE: The team confirmed the news, signing Gettis to a one-year contract.
