The Cleveland Browns signed defensive tackle Justin Zimmer off of the Atlanta Falcons practice squad on Tuesday afternoon. It’s exactly the kind of news you’d expect for this team during this year.

Zimmer went undrafted in the 2016 NFL Draft, and was signed by the Buffalo Bills. After spending some time on the New Orleans Saints practice squad and the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes, Zimmer was signed by the Atlanta Falcons on April 17, 2018. Zimmer made the Falcons roster and made his regular season debut in Week 3, recording no stats. He was later waived in October and was re-signed to the practice squad where he’s essentially been up until today.

Dan Quinn has spent the last two years hoarding Zimmer in the hopes that he’d turn into a useful reserve. It’s frustrating to see a player the team appeared to like a great deal poached by someone else, but that’s the nature of the business. Zimmer won’t be around next year to compete for a spot in what’s likely to be a re-built Falcons defensive line.

The Falcons viewed Zimmer as a developmental player and now he’s gone, leaving an open spot on the practice squad. The Falcons current practice squad is:

  • S Chris Cooper
  • QB Danny Etling
  • WR Devin Gray
  • G Sean Harlow
  • DE Austin Larkin
  • OT Lukayus McNeil
  • DB CJ Reavis
  • RB Craig Reynolds
  • LB Ahmad Thomas

Look for the Falcons to add a player to the practice squad in the upcoming days.
