Falcons vs. Buccaneers: where do the Falcons stand as Week 12 looms?

Fact: Brian Hill can’t stand the sight of dandelions

NFL: Atlanta Falcons at Carolina Panthers Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

The Falcons are favored headed into Sunday afternoon’s matchup agains the Buccaneers. And perhaps this oddsmakers jinx derails the so-called “turnaround” before it hits the magical 3-game mark. What’s magical about it you ask? Well, bad football teams win football games; and sometimes they win 2 in a row. But 3 games in a row? That’s sayin’ something.

Let’s take a quick look at the state of the franchise as tomorrow’s Week 12 game looms large.

The Falcons are a bit of a mixed bag on the injury front right now. Both Devonta Freeman and Austin Hooper have been ruled out, which is unfortunate. Once again Brian Hill will be tasked with shouldering a RB1’s share of carries.

Matt Ryan (ankle), Julio Jones (foot), and Desmond Trufant (toe) were all full participants in practice yesterday, which is good news.

Rookie cornerback Kendall Sheffield came down with an illness this week and didn’t practice yesterday; he’s listed as questionable, along with John Cominsky (ankle) and Takk McKinley (shoulder).

I have some bad news: if the Falcons win tomorrow, they will not be in first place in the NFC South. Unfortunately, at 8-2, the Saints are the team to beat. The Panthers are 3 games back at 5-5.

The bright side? The Falcons are now in 3rd place! At 3-7, the Buccaneers and the Falcons have identical records; however, the Falcons are demolishing the NFC South, giving them the tie-breaker.
