It was Competition Wednesday in Flowery Branch, according to head coach Dan Quinn, but several players were sidelined and unable to participate. Headlining that list are quarterback Matt Ryan, wide receiver Julio Jones, and defensive linemen Takk McKinley and Adrian Clayborn.
I’m not terribly worried about Ryan, who hasn’t practiced on Wednesdays and has been taking it a bit easier as he continues to work back to 100 percent after suffering a high ankle sprain against the Rams in Week 7. I’m also not worried about Julio unless he remains unable to participate into Friday. The team tends to err on the side of caution with keeping Jones fresh.
I am a bit concerned about Takk McKinley and Adrian Clayborn’s status for this week. McKinley was able to return to the game in Carolina after suffering a shoulder injury, so hopefully this is primarily precautionary. Clayborn suffered a groin injury against the Panthers. This defense has been so much fun to watch over the past two weeks, and here’s hoping Takk and Clay are able to get out there against the Bucs this week.
Devonta Freeman and Austin Hooper were both held out of Wednesday’s practice, which isn’t surprising given they were still expected to be sidelined. Kemal Ishmael is dealing with a concussion, so he will return after he clears the NFL’s protocol. John Cominsky is still rehabbing that ankle injury.
