Falcons waive P Matt Wile with injury settlement

Kasey Redfern looks like he’s up for the rest of the season.

Matt Bosher missed one game from 2011-2018, but he’s on injured reserve now. Now the man who replaced him—and up until last Sunday, the only other man to punt for Atlanta from 2011-2019—is hurt too.

The Falcons have elected to waive Matt Wile with an injury settlement, leaving Kasey Redfern as their punter for at least the foreseeable future. Redfern just turned in a solid day against Arizona, but I’m still sort of startled that this is the third punter for this team in 2019, and fourth if you count Sam Irwin-Hill’s brief stint that was ruined because he couldn’t get a work visa in time for last Sunday’s game.

Redfern will hopefully hold up well in what should be considered an extended audition for a job in 2020, given that Bosher’s contract is up at the end of the year and the Falcons were always probably going to at least mull other options heading into the offseason. If Redfern isn’t up to the task, well, the Falcons will ride this punter carousel to the very end.

The other moves are not surprising. John Wetzel is back on the team as an emergency depth option along the offensive line and has had quite a season bouncing off and on the roster, while tight end Carson Meier gets another crack at the practice squad.
