The addition of Jeff Overbaugh to the practice squad only made sense if the Falcons were hellbent on finding a long-term successor for Josh Harris or Harris was injured. We’re finding out today that it was the latter situation.
Per multiple reports, Josh Harris is nursing a hip injury, and the Falcons seem genuinely unsure of whether he’ll be able to go Thursday night at this point. If that’s the case, the reason they left that last roster spot open becomes glaringly obvious, though they’ll still likely look to fill it with a veteran addition after the week is over.

Overbaugh comes with a reputation as a pretty good long snapper, and the Falcons want to be sure they have someone on hand if Harris is hurt. That means if we get to Wednesday and Harris is still gimpy, they’ll likely activate Overbaugh from the practice squad without needing to cut ties with anyone else to do so. That’s a solid enough play for the team, and they can decide if they want to keep Overbaugh around on the practice squad after that.
Monitor this one closely with us, and we’ll see if the Falcons need to turn to a different long snapper for the first time since the 2011 season.
