The Atlanta Falcons have made their wave of roster cuts and now have 52 players remaining on the roster, with the team announcing the cuts in one fell swoop this morning.
There are very few surprise cuts here, with Sean Harlow probably topping the list, though we knew the former fourth round pick would be gone yesterday. The Falcons did surprise me by keeping Richard “Dewey” Jarivs, Matt Gono and Justin Zimmer on the active roster, meaning three UDFAs made this very talented team. That’s pretty cool.
Zimmer’s pass rushing upside apparently earned him the nod over Garrison Smith, who had a strong preseason as well. Gono is a high-upside tackle who could step into the swing tackle role a year from now. Jarvis was a player the Falcons seemed to like quite a bit, based on his playing time this preseason, but he might be the biggest surprise of all, especially because he beat out Jonathan Celestin.
Otherwise, the roster shook out the way most of us thought it would throughout the summer. The Falcons kept six cornerbacks and six wide receivers, and they aren’t surprising choices. Now the Falcons will have to fill one roster spot and will get to face the Eagles on Thursday night. The team will assemble their practice squad beginning tomorrow at noon, as well.
Here are the cuts.
