Devonta Freeman to make acting debut in ‘Escape Plan’ sequel

The newest installment will be out Friday, direct-to-video.

NFL: Carolina Panthers at Atlanta Falcons Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

If you want to catch Falcons RB Devonta Freeman in action, but in a rather unorthodox way, you might throw your attention to the new Escape Plan film.

The sequel to the prison-set action franchise will head directly to on demand services on Friday (June 29), and Freeman will have a small role in the film as an inmate in whatever new dangerous prison Sylvester Stallone and now Dave Bautista will be trying to break out of. The film apparently shot in Atlanta, which might be how Free got involved.

It’s said his character landed in jail for missing a key block in a Super Bowl. (JK we love you, Free!)

You can watch the trailer for Escape Plan 2: Hades below, and see Freeman at about the 30-second point.

He’s not the first Falcons face to be in a movie — former TE Tony Gonzalez was in the latest xXx film with Vin Diesel, and star CB Deion Sanders was in Draft Day (along with everyone else in the NFL). Hey, even Jamal “Dirty Bird” Anderson went to the Oscars one year.

Atlanta is growing as a hub for film production, and it’s not implausible to think more Falcons over time will make surprise appearances in movies like this. Hey, how about a supporting role for Julio Jones in an upcoming Marvel film? Matt Ryan as Katniss Everdeen’s long-lost brother? Ty Sambrailo in a Terrence Malick movie? Hey, a guy can dream.

The first Escape Plan film’s actually pretty fun for what it is, though we’re unsure how a direct-to-home entertainment sequel will fare. But, hey, Free’s in it, so at least it’ll have something redeemable going for it! IMDB says he’s in the sequel, too, perhaps this role is more than a cameo.

We’ll have to see how Freeman’s acting debut goes when the film hits wherever you decide to watch it Friday (if you do, that is).
