We’ve spent the last couple of months wondering what the Falcons are going to do in free agency, and we’re a little closer to understanding that now, both in terms of proximity and actually knowing.
That’s because the Falcons have cut ties with Derrick Shelby and Levine Toilolo, and essentially announced that Dontari Poe, Taylor Gabriel, and Kemal Ishmael won’t be returning. I had expected the team to make a push to re-sign Poe, at the very least, and I thought bringing back Ishmael just made sense, though I never thought Gabriel would return. There are holes to fill now, but first, the Falcons have to take care of their own.
So what will the Falcons do with their own free agents? Here’s my guess, at this stage of the game.
Re-Sign
RB Terron Ward (RFA)
DE Adrian Clayborn
DE/DT Courtney Upshaw
DT Ahtyba Rubin
LB LaRoy Reynolds
CB Blidi Wreh-Wilson
S Ricardo Allen (RFA)
S Sharrod Neasman (ERFA)
K Matt Bryant (Done!)
Clayborn is the biggest name on the list by a wide margin, and the most expensive. Bryant will be costly (for a kicker) and Reynolds will probably require a multi-year deal, but otherwise none of these guys should be particularly expensive or difficult to re-sign. This would give the Falcons a solid foundation heading into free agency and the draft.
Who is on your list?
