2018 NFL free agency primer for the Atlanta Falcons

It is nearly time.

The Atlanta Falcons, like 31 other NFL teams, will be kicking off free agency on Wednesday afternoon. The team will be busily talking to agents today and leading right up to the official kickoff of free agency, but they won’t be formally announcing any deals until that time.

The Falcons will need to be busy to bolster their upcoming draft class and paper over some holes, but they’re unlikely to be major players when teams like the 49ers, Browns, and Buccaneers have a ton of cap space to throw around. With any luck, though, they’ll get their needs taken care of within their budget and gear up for a successful 2018.

Here’s what you need to know about free agency before it starts.

Free Agency Details

When: Wednesday, March 14, 4 p.m. EST

What: Teams can reach and announce free agent signings, though in principle the Falcons and other teams will likely have done so before 4 p.m. rolls around. You can expect a flurry of signings initially, and then a steady trickle of them in the days and weeks ahead.

Where: Everywhere!

List of Falcons Free Agents

DE/DT Courtney Upshaw

DT Ahtyba Rubin

LB Kemal Ishmael

LB LaRoy Reynolds

LB Jordan Tripp

LB Sean Weatherspoon

Positions of Need

  1. Defensive Tackle
  2. Defensive End
  3. Guard
  4. Tight End
  5. Wide Receiver
  6. Fullback

It’ll be especially critical that the Falcons get a new starting defensive tackle to pair with Grady Jarrett. They would like another tight end, potentially a new starting right guard, and a strong rotational defensive end, at minimum, but defensive tackle looms largest.

Who’s available at positions of need?

Our own Allen Strk did an excellent job of rounding up some of these key positions and sharing the dream free agents (and more realistic targets) at each. Read it!
