I think it’s more than fair to say that the Falcons will be active in free agency, even if it’s not likely to be marked by the kind of franchise-altering splashes we’ve seen in recent years with the likes of Alex Mack and Dontari Poe.
From today until the start of free agency on Wednesday, March 14 at 4 p.m. EST, teams can negotiate with the agents of impending free agents across the league. This allows teams to try to put together a framework for a deal and snap up free agents more or less immediately after free agency starts, allowing them to get their signings out of the way early. At minimum, it’s a head start on a contract that could prove to be valuable.
Legal tampering officially begins at noon, I believe, but you’ll start hearing rumors well before then. The Falcons have more vacancies on this roster than they can possibly (or smartly) fill via their six draft selections and a group of undrafted free agents alone, which means they should be in the market for at least one starter (fullback, at minimum) and several reserves. We’ll soon know what their plans are, and I for one can’t wait to move into the portion of the offseason that involves talking about who is coming aboard rather than who is leaving.
