We spend a lot of time discussing the free agents and draft picks we do want, and very little discussing the ones we don’t want. That typically is because the offseason is for dreaming and there’s not much point in talking about players we don’t think will get near the team in the first place. That said, there are names that have been discussed that I’m sure you want nowhere near this football team, and tonight I’d like to touch on the name on that list that you really hope Atlanta avoids.
For me, it’s Jarvis Landry. I don’t think Landry is a bad player, and I certainly think he is so sought-after because he was a target hog in Miami, where he got 100+ balls regularly. The fact that he averaged under 10 yards per reception should give you some pause if you’re lusting after him, but more than that, his reported price tag of well north of $10 million per year should give you a lot of pause. In Atlanta’s offense, with its theoretically varied and valuable weapons, Landry would be lucky to get 60-70 targets, and his stats and value would plummet accordingly. I just don’t have a good feeling about Landry being an elite receiver on a different team, and I think the price tag on him would put the Falcons in a bad spot, so I’ll steer clear.
Who would be your choice?
