What if the Falcons once again traded up in the first round? It might seem a bit outlandish, given that Atlanta will start the proceedings with just six draft picks, but Trade Thomas Dimitroff and company have never been shy about jumping up to get the player they want. They did it just a year ago with Takkarist McKinley, after all.
In the latest SB Nation mock draft from Dan Kadar, the Falcons are at it again. This time, they’re moving up for a player many draft analysts feel might be the best defensive tackle in the class, Michigan’s Maurice Hurst. They even trade with the Seahawks to get there for the second straight year.
18. Atlanta Falcons (via Seattle Seahawks): Maurice Hurst, DT, Michigan
If the Falcons want to get Hurst, they may need to move up.
I don’t know exactly what the Falcons would need to surrender to move up here, but it would leave them searching for trade down partners later for the second straight year. Hurst may well be worth it, as he’s drawn many favorable comparisons to Geno Atkins for his size, strength, and quick first step. He and Grady Jarrett would be a lethal combination on the interior of this defensive line, and so I’d be hard-pressed to say I’d dislike this move. The question is whether the Falcons will need to go even higher to get him, and whether they view Hurst as worthy of the price they’ll need to pay to move up.
What do you think of this move, and do you think the Falcons will trade up this April?
