As free agency looms most loomingly, our heads are full of potential additions for this Falcons team. While the big names will dominate the early going, it’s quite often the case that the smaller, quieter signings in March, April, or even later have major roles to play.
In 2017, that was so-so fullback and core special teamer Derrick Coleman, and for better or worse, kick returner and punt returner Andre Roberts. In 2016, Aldrick Robinson, Courtney Upshaw, and LaRoy Reynolds all chipped in, with Upshaw being particularly critical during the team’s playoff run.
So who is your favorite “minor” signing or under-the-radar guy who might end up in Atlanta?
Mine is probably Donte Moncrief, formerly of the Colts. Mixed quarterback play and injuries bit into his production over the last two seasons, but he’s just 25 years old and was a terrific player in his last full season in 2015, putting up 64 receptions, 733 yards, and six touchdowns in a potent Colts offense. As the third option on Atlanta’s receiving corps, his speed and size would make him extremely intriguing, and I have to imagine he’ll come at a semi-reasonable cost given the bigger names on the market and the quieter couple of years he’s just put up. I think he’d add quite a bit of speed and talent to this receiving corps, which could use it.
How about you?
