Falcons RB Devonta Freeman has had injury struggles since the end of the 2017 season, and sadly, the buck hasn’t stopped with his Pittsburgh return.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport dropped the unfortunate news that Freeman’s got a bone contusion in his foot.
#Falcons RB Devonta Freeman (foot) is battling a bone contusion, source said. He didn’t practice today due to the soreness and his status for Sunday is clearly in doubt. He did do work on the side, though.— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) October 10, 2018
So between the 2017 struggles with concussions, the knee problems that got at him to close last season, the knee problems that held him out for three weeks this season, and the new bone contusion in his foot, Freeman’s had a rough patch of injury problems as of late.
We won’t speculate now what that could mean for the future, but I can provide some insight on a contusion. I’ve got one in my knee right now (long story), and it’s painful. They heal up quickly, but swelling and problems with mobility and comfort are clearly issues once they first happen (at least they were for me).
It’s good that Freeman’s able to get some work in on the side, as he’s far tougher than your Weenie Hut Jr. Falcoholic scribe is when it comes to getting hurt, but contusions seem like these just take time, rest, and care to heal.
It’s entirely possible, and perhaps even likely, that Freeman will miss yet another game this week. If he does, the Falcons have proven they can keep the offense rolling without him with Tevin Coleman and Ito Smith taking the bulk of reps and Brian Hill waiting in the wings if needed.
It’s another bummer piece of injury news for a struggling Falcons team, though at least it’s at a position of sterling depth. Here’s wishing Freeman well as he gets better, and here’s hoping he can get back on the field for good, injury-free, very soon.
