For the first time in franchise history, the Atlanta Falcons have snagged playoff victories two seasons in a row. They’ve made the playoffs in back-to-back-to-back years once (from 2010-2012), but they only won a playoff game in one of those seasons. You could say this year’s team is making some unlikely history.
The Falcons, of course, were starved for playoff wins until they made the 1998 Super Bowl, after which point they’ve been to the postseason many times. With this particular mark, the final roadblock remaining is a Super Bowl win. There are basically no other mountains left to climb.
This playoff victory is especially impressive given how much talk there was of this team suffering from a Super Bowl hangover, or being doomed to fail. It’s true that Atlanta struggled a bit this year en route to a 10-6 finish, but they’re now on to the Divisional Round against the Eagles after dispatching the Rams 26-13. They’ll also get to point proudly to that new playoff mark, which is a very fine one indeed.
Celebrate today, folks. The Falcons are alive for yet another week.
