Falcons roster cuts: Who were the biggest surprises?

New, comments

The Falcons made only a small handful of cuts that worth being surprised about.

When a team as good as the Atlanta Falcons makes roster cuts, it’s not exactly surprising that there are few surprises among those cuts. Aside from Ra’Shede Hageman’s suspension, there wasn’t a true shocker in the bunch.

That doesn’t mean there weren’t some mild surprises in the mix, however, and we’ll be running them down here. Weigh in with your choices in the comments, if you would.

Marvin Hall/Reggie Davis

Both of these undrafted free agent wide receivers did good work in the preseason and throughout the summer, with Hall having Sark connections, special teams value, and quality receiving play working in his favor. The fact that Nick Williams beat both out may have had just as much to do with practice squad eligibility as anything else, but it was still a small surprise to me.

Chris Odom/J’Terius Jones

Both defensive ends were terrific during the preseason, with Jones looking better early and standing out as a pass rusher, while Odom looked like a tremendous run stopper in his limited action. The Falcons were loaded with veteran defensive end options, so again this wasn’t a huge surprise, but it was a small one for Odom in particular.

That was really about it, if we’re being honest. Atlanta’s otherwise lined up a roster that looks strong and fit our expectations, and some of these guys will end up in the practice squad. I’m quite happy with the way things turned out.
