The Atlanta Falcons have a quality roster from top to bottom. We all panicked a bit during the preseason watching second and third string players struggle, and that’s an understandable reaction. The truth is that all NFL teams are constantly evaluating their rosters, tweaking here and there to improve the final product.

Vaughn McClure broke some interesting news yesterday about recent workouts the Falcons have hosted. Here’s what he had to say:

Falcons had four guys in for tryout today: LB Kennan Gilchrist, LB Kenneth Olugbode, LB Kache Palacio, and RB Josh Rounds. Always looking for linebacker depth, special teams help, practice squad development.

Gilchrist recently worked out for the Texans as well. He was signed by the Dallas Cowboys as undrafted free agent out of Appalachian State. He’s an athletic, smallish linebacker, which should come as no surprise, given the kind of players Dan Quinn has added to the roster during his tenure. He put up 225 pounds 26 times and ran a sub 4.6 40 yard dash at his pro day as well. On paper, this makes sense.

Olugbode was signed by the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent out of Colorado. PFF raved about how quickly he plays, even if didn’t run the fastest 40. He comes from a football family but physically, he didn’t impress pro scouts prior to the draft.

Palacio was signed by the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent out of Washington State in 2016. He spent last season on their practice squad but was cut after re-signing with them during the offseason. He flashed some big play ability in preseason action, for what that’s worth. Also, back in August, Russell Wilson called him “super fast.” So that’s cool.

Rounds signed with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent out of Tulane. The Bears and the Arizona Cardinals extended him mini camp invites. Strangely the Bears didn’t actually sign him until early August, and they subsequently cut him. His college numbers were decidedly mediocre, and he was decidedly mediocre in preseason action.

It’s interesting that the Falcons are looking at so many linebackers. I’m not reading into it, but don’t be surprised if they keep considering their options, at least until Vic Beasley returns. Your thoughts?
