Falcons preseason talk: Matt Simms or Alek Torgersen

Atlanta has a decision to make for their third quarterback.

The Atlanta Falcons have an MVP starting quarterback, and a savvy (if aging) veteran backup in Matt Schaub. Neither of those guys are in any danger of losing their jobs, which means there’s hardly a competition to be had at quarterback.

Only there is, sort of. Matt Simms and rookie undrafted free agent Alek Torgersen are competing for the third quarterback job in Atlanta, which means little more than a practice squad spot for 2017. Still, an opportunity to hang around is a potential opportunity to replace Schaub a year from now, when he’s not guaranteed a spot.

My money’s on Torgersen. Simms has the familiarity with the offense and makes good reads, and has managed to hang around despite a weak arm for a little while now, so he should be the favorite. But I like Torgersen’s physical tools, and while he was accurate and not much else against the Dolphins, I think he has a real shot to hang on when all is said and done. He has a good enough arm and can move a bit in the pocket, and what more are you looking for with your third quarterback?

Let’s get your take on who wins the competition, then use this as your open thread for the evening.
