Should the Falcons make a run at Ryan Mathews?

The team is again on the lookout for a new running back, and the veteran checks off all the boxes.

The Falcons have a problem at running back. Behind Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman, all they have is a question mark. Now that Freeman is concussed and backup B.J. Daniels was cut, the team needs another healthy back. Both Freeman and Coleman seem to struggle with injuries, so the team’s third running back gets plenty of playing time.

The team is likely trying to upgrade over Terron Ward, a polished but otherwise unspectacular talent. Early on, we were unsure what to make of Brian Hill. Was he going to replace Freeman after he walks in free agency? There were some rumors that he could play fullback. Now he’s been invisible in training camp and had a terrible week one of preseason. It seems like the staff is not quite sure what to make of Hill either, and he may be destined for the practice squad.

The team is reportedly working out David Cobb, Jhurell Pressley and Bralon Addison. If you have heard of more than one of those players, you are a liar. What could the Falcons do?

Mathews had neck surgery, but has passed a physical and believes he is healthy. He is a solid back who still has some of his burst. In the last two seasons he has averaged more than 4.5 yards per carry, and is a threat catching the football. He definitely has an injury history, but would be pretty far from a lead back.

Since we are just spitballing, let us know what back you think the Falcons should sign.
