With rumors about Jalen Collins needing a strong camp to secure a roster spot, we have been trying to figure out how the defensive backs will eventually shake out. Obviously Robert Alford, Desmond Trufant, and Brian Poole are roster locks.
By my best guess, Collins is battling for a roster spot with C.J. Goodwin, Akeem King, and Deji Olatoye. Bad news for Collins is that Goodwin has transitioned from undrafted wide receiver to impact corner in just one season. ESPN’s Vaughn McClure said Goodwin made the play of the day in camp today.
CB C.J. Goodwin, who continues to flash coming off a strong showing in the Super Bowl, tracked down a Matt Ryan pass intended for Marvin Hall in 11 on 11 and made a sliding interception near the goal line.
Goodwin seemed unlikely to ever be active after changing positions, but seems to be solidifying himself as Atlanta’s #4 corner. It has been a truly impressive jump up the depth chart on his part. After Goodwin, Atlanta has two players who have flashed in very limited time: Olatoye and King.
Dan Quinn does not play favorites, so there is a chance Collins needs to show out better than both those players for a chance to stick with the team.
