Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan turned 32 in May. That’s hard to believe, but I assure you, it’s true. I remember the baby faced quarterback the Falcons drafted in 2008. Ryan has his detractors now, but he had a whole lot more back then. Fast forward to 2017: Ryan is coming off his best season yet. He led the Falcons to the Super Bowl, earning the prized MVP designation in the process.
Ryan is under contract through the end of the 2018 season. It seems like just yesterday that he signed his 5 year, $104 million dollar deal. There’s no way the Falcons let Ryan get to free agency, so around this time next year, expect the Falcons to extend Ryan. The only questions are “how long” and “for how much?” Meanwhile Ryan couldn’t care less. He’s only focused on football.

Ryan is represented by Tom Condon, another Boston College alumnus and one of the heaviest hitting agents representing NFL players today. Derek Carr and Andrew Luck are making $25 million a year, so I’d imagine Condon will try to get his client as close to that number as possible. At this point there’s no indication Ryan is slowing down or regressing, but like it or not, he will eventually. So general manager Thomas Dimitroff will need to strike that balance when the time comes.
For now, Ryan is taking a hands off approach, leaving business to the businesspeople.
