With the release of Soma Vainuku, Derrick Coleman currently holds all the cards in the team’s fullback battle. He’s the most experienced player, he has some ties to Dan Quinn, and his chief competition is an undrafted free agent. I would have bought the idea that he was the heavy favorite for the job.
After hearing from Quinn today, though, I’ve decided he’s all but got it. This isn’t a direct quote, mind you, but it says enough.
Asked @FalconsDQ about the fullback battle, said he likes the speed & versatility of Derrick Coleman — can play fullback and halfback

There may be a twist in here—Tyler Renew may be awesome, or Coleman might get hurt—but I’d give it a 95% chance that he’s the starting fullback come Week 1 of the 2017 season. Versatility and being #fast do wonders on Dan Quinn’s Falcons, and while Coleman isn’t the most punishing lead blocker out there, he should be able to hold down the fort just fine in what’s likely to be a reduced fullback role for Atlanta.
