The Atlanta Falcons have won two games in a row, catapulting them into the thick of the NFC playoff race and putting them in an excellent position to make the postseason. None of that makes them a favorite on the road against an angry Saints team, and it probably shouldn’t.
The Falcons are five point underdogs (or a little more, depending on where you look), and that’s for many reasons. There’s the fact that the Falcons have won their last two games by a combined six points, including a three point win at home against this same Saints team that featured a ton of New Orleans injuries. There’s the fact that they lost 14-9 to the Vikings the week before that. There’s the fact, when you come right down to it, that this team has not been particularly impressive for weeks now, though they’re winding up on the right side of the win column regardless.
None of this is to say that Atlanta can’t win in New Orleans, because they absolutely can, and it would be wonderful if they did. We do have to acknowledge that New Orleans has had the more impressive season on balance, and thus it is only fair that they are expected to win at home.
