Falcons re-sign kicker Mike Meyer with Matt Bryant injured

He could see game action this Sunday.

NFL: Jacksonville Jaguars at Atlanta Falcons Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Falcons have one of the NFL’s best kickers in Matt Bryant, but as we’re remembering this season, even one of the greatest kickers of all-time is mortal. He’s been banged up a couple of times, and may actually be in danger of missing Sunday’s home game against the Cowboys.

The Falcons are hedging their bets with Bryant dealing with his leg injury, and they’ve signed Mike Meyer to the practice squad. Meyer, you’ll remember, had a successful summer with the Falcons and was briefly on the practice squad earlier this year when Bryant was dealing with a back ailment. If Bryant can’t go, Meyer will come up from the practice squad, and the Falcons will need to cut ties with a player on the back end of their roster to make room.

Cutting Grayson leaves them without a third quarterback, though I imagine they’ll look to bring back Grayson after this week. Meyer looks like he’s got a quality leg and could become a solid kicker in the NFL, but he’s an obvious downgrade from Bryant in a critical matchup, so we’ll hope the (largely) ageless wonder is good to go.

Welcome back, Mike Meyer!
