Atlanta is headed back home this week to play the Buffalo Bills after barely escaping Detroit with a win last Sunday. These two teams don’t have the most exciting or storied history with one another, but they have played more times than one would think.
Atlanta and Buffalo haven’t played each other in four years and they have not played in Atlanta in eight years, so this Sunday will be the first time a lot of this Falcons team takes on the Bills.
Series records
The Falcons have played the Bills 11 times in the two teams’ history, with the first game taking place on Dec. 2, 1973 in Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium when the Bills defeated Atlanta, 17-6.
Over the course of the series, the Falcons have won seven of the 11 games by an average of 11 points per victory. Atlanta has also won the last four meetings, the latest of which was a 34-31 overtime victory in Toronto, ON.
Biggest win, biggest loss
Of the seven wins Atlanta has over Buffalo, their largest victory came in 2009 when they beat the Bills in Atlanta by 28 points, 31-3. A Matt Ryan-led Falcons squad dominated Buffalo in what was a great performance all-around to earn the team their eighth win of the season.
This series isn’t all peachy for the Falcons, though. In 1992, Atlanta took a trip to Buffalo and got blown out, 41-14. That 27-point loss is by far the worst loss the Falcons have in the series. One of the lone bright spots in that game was a 73-yard kickoff return by Deion Sanders in the second quarter.
Series quick-hitters
- Matt Ryan has won his only two games against the Bills, throwing four touchdowns, no interceptions, and a completion rate of 56.1 percent.
- Dan Quinn has yet to coach against the Bills as the head coach of the Falcons, so he will look to start his own series against Buffalo with a win.
- Atlanta is 4-1 at home when the Bills come to Atlanta. The Bills last win in Atlanta came in the very first game of the series.
The Falcons take on the Bills on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. EST on CBS, and are currently favored by eight points at home. If you can’t watch the game, tune into 92.9 The Game in Atlanta or the Tune-In Radio App if you are out of town.
Do you think the Falcons will extend their win streak to five games today?
