Adrian Clayborn injury: Defensive end tears bicep, will miss rest of playoffs

It’s a blow to the Falcons’ defense.

NFL: Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Atlanta Falcons Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

Lost in the Julio Jones injury news and overwhelming joy that accompanied the 36-20 Falcons win Saturday, Adrian Clayborn leaving the game with a bicep injury might not have registered on your personal radar. Unfortunately, though, it wound up being a major injury.

Clayborn has been one of the team’s more productive defenders when he has been on the field, and has been perhaps the team’s third-best pass rusher behind Vic Beasley and Dwight Freeney. Losing him hurts the team’s depth and strength on defense at the exact moment they’re about to be matched up against a high-octane offense, whether that be Dallas or Green Bay. It sucks, in other words.

Without Clayborn, you should see more run for the likes of Jonathan Babineaux, Brooks Reed, and Courtney Upshaw. Babs and Reed had their most productive games of the year against that brutal Seattle offensive line, and will hopefully be able to repeat that magic.

We wish Clayborn a swift recovery and look forward to seeing him next season. Hopefully the Falcons can soldier on well without him.
